B.V.Narayana Rao

Prof. B.V. Narayana Rao received his early education at Fort High School, Intermediate College, and Central College in Bangalore. Following the completion of his Masters in Physics (M.Sc) from Mysore University, he embarked on his career as a Physics lecturer at Central and Intermediate College, Bangalore, from 1943 to 1945.

In 1945, Prof. BVN joined Vijaya College, where he not only served as a lecturer but also assumed the role of the Head of the Department of Physics. His dedication to academia was evident through his involvement in the Academic Council and the Senate, and he further served as the Chairman of the Board of Studies in Physics at Bangalore University.

Beyond his academic pursuits, Prof. BVN displayed a keen interest in sports. He actively contributed to the sporting community by serving as the Secretary and Class I referee at the Mysore State Basketball Association.

Prof. BVN's illustrious career spanned over three decades, during which he retired as a Principal and Professor of Physics in 1975. His commitment to education continued as he became a member of the BHS Managing Committee in 1976. Later, in 1986, he assumed the positions of Vice-President and Treasurer of the Committee.

Recognizing his leadership and dedication, Prof. B.V. Narayana Rao was elected as the Secretary of BHSHES on September 12, 1998, further contributing to the institution's growth and development.

There was a period when the name Prof. BVN was synonymous with Physics textbooks, highlighting his significant contributions to the field. Prof. BVN emerged as a prominent figure in the realm of Physics authorship. His impact was profound, especially through textbooks that became widely recognized.

One of his notable works, "Guide to Intermediate Physics," presented Physics in a straightforward and accessible manner, making the subject approachable for students. Another publication, "Common sense Physics," delved into the practical applications of Physics in everyday life, showcasing Prof. BVN's commitment to making the subject relevant and comprehensible.

Prof. BVN's authorship extended to numerous books on Physics and Electronics. Some of these include "General Physics and Properties of Matter," "Engineering Physics," "Electronic Components and Devices," and "Principles of Electronics." His contributions were not confined to English; he also authored works in Kannada, such as "PreUniversity Bhowtha Vijnana," published by Bangalore University, and "Belakina Swaroopa."

Prof. BVN's extensive body of work in physics education, both in English and Kannada, demonstrated his commitment to enhancing students' and enthusiasts' comprehension of the subject.

Prof. BVN's reputation extended beyond being a distinguished Physics teacher; he earned high regard from individuals appointed in various roles under his guidance. Known for his approachability and friendly demeanor, Prof. BVN was characterized by kindness and compassion. His visionary leadership instilled a sense of job security among the staff, reflecting his commitment to their well-being. Despite striving for excellence and reaching great heights in his career, Prof. BVN remained grounded. His legacy is one of lasting impact, leaving an indelible mark on generations of teachers and students. The memory of Prof. BV Narayana Rao will endure, upheld by those who had the privilege of learning from and working alongside him.

A true embodiment of authenticity, Prof. B.V. Narayana Rao, who peacefully departed to his heavenly abode on September 17, 2019, just a few months shy of reaching the remarkable age of 100, can be aptly characterized as an individual marked by humility and simplicity. Born on April 5, 1920, to the late Sri Rao Bahadur B. Venkateshachar, a director at the Indian Institute of Science and the founder and President of BHSHES, Prof. BVN faithfully continued the legacy established by his illustrious father.
